Brown Sugar
Brown sugar is essentially sugar with molasses added back into it, or it can be sugar that is less refined, naturally retaining molasses. It has a soft, moist texture and a rich, caramel-like flavor. It is made from sugarcane or sugar beet. The raw sugar produced from these plants goes through a refining process. Some of this sugar retains the molasses, giving it its brown color, while some brown sugar is made by mixing refined white sugar with molasses.
